Payment not going through in Stripe?

Common reasons a Stripe payment may fail and what to try before another attempt

💳 Payment not going through in Stripe?

If a payment on a website using Stripe does not go through, it does not always mean there is a problem with the card. A decline may be related to the IP address, VPN / proxy, device, browser, billing address, 3DS verification, or restrictions set by the merchant.

What to try first

  1. Check your IP and connection.

    • If you use a VPN or proxy, try a different stable server or a direct connection if the website is accessible without it.
    • Avoid free, public, or overloaded VPN / proxy servers, as these IPs may trigger additional checks more often.
    • Ideally, keep the same IP country throughout checkout and payment.
  2. Try another device.

    • If payment fails on a computer, try a phone, and vice versa.
    • Use a normal browser without unusual extensions or automation whenever possible.
  3. Try another browser or a clean session.

    • Open the website in a different browser.
    • Clear cookies / site data or use a private window and restart checkout.
    • Temporarily disable extensions that may block payment-page scripts.
  4. Check the card details and balance.

    • Make sure the card number, expiration date, and CVV are correct.
    • Keep enough balance for both the purchase amount and the transaction fee.
  5. Check the billing address.

    • If Stripe / the merchant asks for a billing address, fill it in carefully.
    • Follow the recommendations in Billing address.
  6. Complete 3DS verification if it appears.

If it still does not work

  • Do not repeat the same payment many times in a row — a chain of declines may lead to additional restrictions or a card freeze.
  • Wait and try again from a different device / browser / connection.
  • If possible, try another merchant: different websites may use different card acceptance and risk rules.
  • Make sure the merchant accepts cards of your region / card type and does not restrict foreign or virtual cards.

If you have had several declines in a row, also read Card freeze.
